I've Got the Music in Me

Today's #Blogtober14 post is about the one thing I can't live without. This one was easy as I have one thing integral to my life and happiness - I'd go crazy without music. I'm the kind of person who constantly needs to hear it in the background. I always have Pandora or Spotify running on my phone and it's that not available, I make my own music. Most of the time I don't realize I'm singing or humming until someone points it out. It used to drive my siblings crazy when we'd sit down to do our homework together at the dining room table.

My parents say I started singing when I was 3 and I haven't stopped since. I was in multiple choirs for 15 years and I've been a church cantor for the last 9. Music has always been a huge part of my life. It's helped me make friends, build my sense of confidence, and process emotions.
cantoring for my cousin's wedding

One of my favorite quotes is "music is what feelings sound like." I'm convinced that there are songs for every situation. Music enhances every aspect of life. We walk down the aisle to music at weddings and graduations, dance to music at parties and work out with our favorite playlist. What would horror movies be without scary music or rodeos without someone singing about a truck? Hell, even elevators have music.

People who know me, know I need my music. Music is my life. Music is me.

I'm the Kinda Girl Who...

...Caught on to this linkup really late today. How did I not know about this? Maybe because you haven't been around Monica, geez! I really like this idea so I still wanna write about it.

Here it goes!

I'm the kind of girl who...

...loves to make people laugh, even if it's at my own expense.

...hates getting ready, but loves going out.

...reads a book in one sitting and then gets depressed because it's over so quickly.

...loves my boyfriend to death, but will bust on him at every opportunity.

...hates cats. They're so snobby, though.

...takes a picture of everything (for the blog!), but always forgets to post them.

...loves to sing everything.

...loves to have her picture taken.

...loves blogging more than I ever thought was possible.

...is always cold because I have Reynauds disease. Yes, even in the Summer.

...who loves to photobomb people.

Silent Vlog

Happy Friday everyone!

I'm in the best mood ever because I just finished the final final of my undergrad career. Let's be real I'm also excited because the only thing standing between me and Mexico is the fact that I still have to pack all my stuff. I'll still be posting while I'm gone because I have some amazing guests stopping by

ANYWAY, I just sent in my last ASL assignment and since it's a video, I'll be linking up with the always awesome (ya alliterations!) Ashten for #Vloglikeaboss.

I also want to make you aware of the fact that this travesty happened last week in not only the world stage, but in the sign language world. This imposter who claims to have been in the middle of a schizophrenic attack when he effed up everything signed gibberish at Neslson Mandela's memorial service stated that "I think that I've been a champion of sign language.” NO BUDDY. You are an embarrassment to your country and interpreters everywhere and you are an insult to the Deaf Community.

Here's my video. I'm signing real words about myself.

Translation along the lines of:
Hi my name is Monica, I'm a student at Temple University. My major is speech-language-hearing. I live in a house with my family. I have a mom and dad and two siblings - one sister and one brother. I'm the oldest. My sister's name is Lauren; she's 20 years old. My brother Christian is the youngest. He's 19 years old.

We don't have any pets. We used to have a goldfish named Ralf. Now he's dead. In the past, my family lived in Philadelphia, now we live in Bensalem. My boyfriend's name is Kris we met and fell in love. We've been dating for 5 years. Maybe in the future he'll propose marriage.

My favorite drink is tea. I like to read books, but I don't like reading for school. I also like to cook. I cook for about a half hour a day. WHen I'm not reading or cooking, I'm at work. I work at a food store called B***** D*****. I work about 20 hours. My job is pretty easy. My family is small, but my mom and dad have big families. I have 26 aunts and uncles and about 50 cousins. We have a family reunion once a year for Christmas. I love my family.

Thanks for watching me sign!

Weekend Shenanigans & Studying for Finals

Hey Bloggers, it's Monday! I'm sure you're all still thawing out since this is basically what the United States looked like this weekend. Except you, Florida. What da hale?
I wish I could say that my weekend was full of fun shenanigans, but I spent the majority of it in my room, at my desk, studying. The most exciting thing that happened this weekend was leaving my room for 3 hours to go drink wine with my best friend.

Friday I cleaned the whole first floor and put up all the Christmas decorations. And studied. Ate dinner. And studied. Then drank wine. And studied.
Saturday, I studied all day, then sang at Mass and went to Amy's. We talked about boots, school, work and how much we missed each other. Oh, and how I'm leaving for Mexico in FIVE DAYS. Then I came home and studied some more.

Sunday, I studied then turned on the Eagles game to see this.
The Eagles won after the most exciting game I've ever seen and that means I get free coffee today at Dunkin. Yay!

Studying is such a process for me so I thought I'd share it with you.

8 stages of studying for finals
Stage 1 - "Ah, I have plenty of time!"
Stage 2 - Contemplate starting soon.
Stage 3 - Get distracted by Pinterest.
Stage 4 - Put game face on.
Stage 5 - "Crap, is this on the test?"
Stage 6 - Go into panic mode.
Stage 7 - Consider dropping out to be a stripper.
Stage 8 - Give in to exhaustion.

Factoid.

Guys, my bff Kaylee (if that is her real name) wants me to tell you 11 random facts about myself. This sounds like a good idea since I didn't get around to writing a post today.

  1. I already have my wedding date picked even though Kristo hasn't proposed to me yet.
  2. I want 6 kids. He wants 3.
  3. I will intentionally cross the street if the other side is sunnier.
  4. The Sound of Music is my favorite musical. And no matter who performs in it, I will still love it.
  5. I'll be getting my diploma in February, but I don't get a graduation. There weren't enough of us to justify holding a Winter commencement. Laaaaame.
  6. I found out that house hunters isn't real, but I can't stop watching.
  7. I'm shy. When I meet someone for the first time, I put in a lot of extra work so I don't come off as snobby(does that make sense?). It is emotionally draining.
  8. I've seen Halestorm, my favorite band 7 times in 3 years. Glee performed one of their songs in an episode this year and then they won a Grammy.
  9. When customers are rude to me, I secretly smash their chips as I scan them.
  10. I also make hideous faces at little kids while their parents aren't looking.
  11. I talk like Fran Drescher...like a lot.
If you wanna know more random facts about me check out these posts!

And just because every post needs a picture.

Ugly sweater contest from Christmas 2011. Still bitter that I didn't win.

#SelfiesForDays

I can't believe I just named my post that.

TGIF! Today’s #Blogtember prompt calls for a self-portrait. I can’t draw. But maybe, just maybe, it wants me to figuratively paint a self-portrait of myself so yous can learn more about me. In the case that it’s option one, I’ll improvise and use selfies instead. Maybe I’ll throw in a little option two and show pictures that really describe who I am.

I’m a girl who loves taking pics with her family. Can you tell by the way I take selfies with my sleeping dad or how I’m pseudo-attacking my brother? Maybe you can tell I love my family by the pictures I post with sis The Mustached Gangsta. Apologies to mom, who doesn’t have a goofy picture with me lately. I guess I could always use a quote from her because I have plenty of them. I’m giggling silently to myself on the train at this one “I keep inadvertently playing with her toes.” Yeah, that's good.

If you happen to look through my phone you’ll figure out another thing that makes me me. Food and drinks are a central theme in my selfies (and Instagrams for that matter). I mean I don’t look like it, but food is one of my favorite things. Seriously. Give me a five dollar cup of buffalo tots and I’m on
cloud nine. Except don’t make me pay for the expensive gourmet tots because that price is cray cray.

Apparently I like hiding when people take pics of me? No, I’m not Asian. Yes I can fit my whole body into a hoodie (or toybox, hamper, or locker). No, I’m not a G, but I can pretend, right?

I make faces. Lots of faces. The first two are some gems I found in Greg’s Skype folder from my freshman (Sophomore?) year of college. Damn, screenshot feature. I have no idea about that last one.
That last one kinda looks like the obsessive girlfriend meme.
Here are some more weird pics. This picture is a gross exaggeration, but did you know that I’m allergic to the sun? Forrealz, I can’t go out for an extended period of time without getting hives all over. #sadpanda Also, I’m really good at turning myself into Mariachi singers on Snapchat. And then something about battling people with giant foam Q-tips? Also, freshman year of college. I think I thought I looked like a badass. Pffft.
Lastly, I take a ton of selfies at work. Add me on Snapchat and that’s basically where the majority of my Snaps come from. Works Snaps all day, erryday.

I hope you enjoyed the plethora of embarrassing selfies/non-selfies.

Can You Hear Me Now?

Good morning afternoon!

Today's Blogtember Prompt is Describe a distinct moment when your life took a turn.

Since I was a senior in high school, I wanted to be a Speech-Language Pathologist. I wanted to work with stroke and accident victims, administering speech therapy and teaching them how to talk again so they could regain some normalcy in their lives. I decided that I didn't want to work with kids because they were so young and they didn't know what they were missing out on, whereas adults were used to talking their entire lives just to have their voices taken away from them. I wanted to give a voice to those who didn't have one.

When you're an undergrad for Speech Path, you don't only learn about speech stuff.  There are two branches of Communication Sciences --speech and hearing. You need a graduate degree to get a job in either field so I always knew there was even more education ahead. I never wanted anything to do with hearing science (audiology). I thought, "the ear is gross and boring. I wanna help people talk." And I thought this for years. Three years.

Fall semester of last year, I had a really difficult class. It was writing intensive and I could. not. deal. I was working 25-30 hours a week, plus coming home and doing schoolwork after being out of the house for 16 hours. I dropped my availability to just weekends and I still couldn't catch up on my homework. I had a nervous breakdown and after having too many panic attacks in one week, I talked to my parents and then my adviser for advice. I dropped the class that was giving me such a hard time and I felt like a failure. How would I ever survive graduate school when I couldn't handle one stupid undergrad class? I looked at application requirements for graduate programs for speech and seeing the 3.8-4.0 average GPAs of the acceptees, I freaked out.

Then there was a moment of clarity...

I decided to Google audiology and I fell in love.  I wanted to know everything about it -- the anatomy of the ear, hearing aids, sound waves, cochlear implant videos on Youtube. I looked up schools with Audiology programs and found that they were less competitive than the speech ones. The degree is a four-year clinical doctorate(scary!), but I finally found my calling in life.

I'm graduating in January so I'll be attending grad school next Fall. This semester is going to be rough between work, classes, taking the GREs(yikes!), asking for recommendation letters, and applying to the 10 schools I have on my list.

So this is the most long-winded post I've ever written. Here's a baby hearing his parents' voices for the first time. Love it.

Funny how one freak-out can change your whole life.

Who Am I?

I decided at the last minute to join the Blogtember challenge with Jenni at Story of My Life. I think with school starting, it'll be a great idea to have my post topic picked out in advance.

So on with today's topic, the post is about where I come from. I'm gonna be a little different and avoid talking about my family or hometown. I'm gonna talk about how I attended Catholic schools from Kindergarten to 8th grade.

Yes, plaid skirts and knee socks we're my uniform for 9 years. Sexy. I had such a different experience growing up in a Catholic school than all of my public school friends. When I started 9th grade at my public high school, it was complete culture shock.
first Communion  //  confirmation pic with the bishop  //  dressed as St. Monica  // first day of school (circa 1997)

Catholic school has made me the person I am today.

I always write in cursive. Being graded on penmanship and only being allowed to write in cursive for the majority of my academic career means I will probably never break the habit. When I started high school, my friends were baffled that I would write in cursive even though I didn't have to anymore. Honestly, it's easier to write this way. I don't have to pick up the pen for every. single. letter. It's also awesome to write my notes in cursive because it means no one will every want to borrow them. Apparently it's hard for people to read? I dunno.
Sample of my lovely cursive
I respect authority figures. When I started high school, it blew my mind that kids would talk back to the teacher or give a principal attitude. It still kinda blows my mind, actually. I see it at work too. I have no idea how people think it's okay to backtalk their manager or supervisor. When passing professors in the hallway, my automatic response is to say good morning or good afternoon, so and so. When I was in grade school, we'd stand up and chant good afternoon, [insert name here] whenever another teacher, principal, priest, or other special visitor entered the classroom. Respect.

I have pretty decent grammatical skills. I'm not saying I don't make a mistake every now and then, but I'm fantastic at proofreading. I actually enjoy it (I should've been a book editor). The first time I proofread one of Kris's term papers, I laughed out loud. When I asked him if he'd ever heard of run-on sentences, his response was "they don't care about that stuff in public schools!" It took every ounce of my self-control to not strangle him. In third grade I knew what a preposition was, how it was used, and was able to recite them in alphabetical order. In 10th grade, my teacher made me explain prepositions to the class because they'd never learned about them before. WHAT?

I have Faith. It is an experience like no other, that I got to learn about the history of what I believe in for 9 years. It's hard to explain, but there is a pride in knowing you went to a school with people who believe in all the same values as you do. Without Catholic school I'd never have caught the liturgical music bug that keeps me close to my faith through my "job" as a church singer today.

I hope this post shows a little more of what makes me me.

I Should Be Ashamed

Bloggers and Bloggettes,

I'm sitting on the couch with Kristo last night and we flip to HBO, which is playing The Day After Tomorrow. Nincompoop tells me he's never seen it so I forced him to abandon the remote and leave it on, even though it's "not [his] kind of movie."

This got me thinking about movies that I should probably be ashamed of not seeing. I know there are a bajillion I haven't watched yet, but I'm just gonna list the most well-known and the ones I've gotten flack for not seeing.

ONE: The Sixth Sense
I have seen every part of this movie, but never in the same sitting. I know the plot, the back story, and the surprise twist, but I've never seen the whole thing at the same time. Take that Bruce Willis.

TWO: Rocky
I know, I know, this classic film takes place in my city. It doesn't mean that I wanna watch a guy who talks like he has shit in his mouth get his face effed up in every other scene. All I need to know about this one is that the Rocky Theme is great workout music.
I can't stop laughing at this. Can't stop, won't stop.

THREE: Anchorman
I really just don't like Will Ferrell. This is also why I haven't seen Step Brothers or Talladega Nights.

FOUR: Pretty Woman
I've also seen clips of this one and I know the storyline, but I've never seen all parts combined. Something about hookers and businessmen. And Richard Gere. Mmm, Richard Gere.

If only I were 30 years older.
FIVE: American Pie
Don't judge me, obviously my 8 year old self wasn't allowed to see this when it first came out. I never really had a desire to see it after that but I know it was one of the "iconic" movies of the time. I did see American Wedding if that floats your boat so I'm not totally in the dark.

If anyone would like to hold me down and force me to watch one of these, hit me up! I'll be the one running the other way.

What movies are you ashamed of not having seen?!

P.S.-  Happy Labor Day! What better way is there to celebrate work than not working?

Someone's Got a Bad Case of the Mondays

It's Monday, bloggers and bloggettes! Today is my last first day of school for my undergrad career. It's bittersweet (mostly bitter). The sweet part is when Megan wished me a happy first day on the Twitter. She's the best.

Since I decided that the only way to get through last night's VMAs was with alcohol, I did not have my head in the blogger game. So as a cop-out, I'm accepting another Liebster award! Thank you to one of my bloggy bffs, Ashten for nominating me. ♡
Since I did this pretty recently, I've only found one newish blogger to nominate. Hello, Allison!
Also, since I'm writing this post in the shitty Blogger app on the train, I'm skipping the rules and 11 random facts part. You can find out some weird stuff about me here.

Interview time!

1. How do you handle managing you blog and "real life" ? I don't tell my mom cuz she'll probably think it's weird. And I'm not entirely sure how it's gonna work out with school just yet. Will keep you posted.
2. What is your biggest pet peeve? People who mispronounce ask as aks.
3. What is the best blog post you’ve written so far? I'm fond of this one when I complain about kids and this one where I complain about work and this one where I tell you awkward things about myself.
4. What is your favorite movie and why? The Sound of Music because Julie Andrews.
5. What is your favorite social media? TWITTER Why is it your favorite? Because I can post how often I want And no one will judge.
6. Tell me who your hero is and why. My mom because she always puts everyone before herself and does whatever she can to make sure her family is taken care of.
7. Wizards or vampires? Wizards duh. If you say vampires, you can't sit with us.
8. When are you the happiest? When Kris and I talk about our future.
9. What is your favorite quote? Since I can't think of anything else, "Winter is coming."
10. Why did you start blogging? Because I was bored, and needed a better way to procrastinate my school work than watching the Steve Wilkos show.
11. Favorite food to eat on your “cheat” day. I have the kind of metabolism that lets me eat whatever the hell I want and not gain an ounce. So I guess I'll say my favorite food, which is mashed potatoes. :)

Time to do the whole go to classes and learn thingy. Have a great day, everyone!

I'd Rather Be Naked

Hey y'all (did I say that right?)

Monday is the first day of school so I figured I should probably do my wash considering how I have nothing to wear.

Since I have to sit and wait for my wash to be done, I figured I should write a post about my love/hate (mostly hate) relationship with laundry.

LOVE:
I love to hold clothes when they're fresh out of the dryer.  Mmm toasty.

I love smelling the fabric softener scent leftover from the wash.

I love being able to look at all of my clean clothes and making outfits in my head.

I love arranging my closet by type and color so I know exactly what's in my inventory.

I love looking fabulous and posting that ish on Instagram in an #ootd post.

HATE:
I hate sorting laundry. Darks? Whites? Nah, throw it all in the same load. Ain't nobody got time for that!

I hate folding. Period. I just hang as many pieces of clothing as humanly possibly.

I hate matching socks. I just throw them all into my drawer and hope it's easy to find a match when I'm in a hurry. Also, the sock monster? He's real.

And if I didn't throw a first world problem into the mix, it wouldn't be a party so here's one for you. I hate that even when all of my clothes are clean and neatly hanging in the closet, I still have nothing to wear.

Whoops, the washer beeped just as I finished "airing out my dirty laundry." Just in tiiiime.

What's your least favorite part of laundry day?

"I Shouldn'ta Told Yeh That!"

Day 5: Today's prompt is: 10 Things you shouldn't know about me, but I'm going to tell you!

This is not my favorite prompt, but I'm being a good blogger(but not really because this shiz should've been posted last night). Here are 10 things I don't tell just anyone. Once again, 10 awesome points for whoever gets the title reference.

1. I don't shave my legs on a normal basis because I'm lazy. At least I know Meg and Juliette won't judge me.

2. I still sleep with a stuffed monkey that Kristo bought me 5 years ago. His name is Nanners. Try not to judge.

3.I also wear a nightguard to sleep so I don't grind my teeth and/or bite my tongue off.

4. I recently broke up with one of my "best friends" - a girl I've been friends with for 12 years because she always expected me to be there for her through all her petty drama and life "problems," which I was. However, she refused to even send a text to acknowledge the fact that my grandmom died.
5. I have certain people who I only talk to every once in a while just to stay on their good side.

6. An easy way to kill me is to feed me watermelon. Throat swelling yeah.

7. The first time I got drunk was when I was 19. My bff Amy and I watched (500) Days of Summer and drank vodka and juice in our dorm room. It ended with us giggling loudly and yelling at my computer screen.

8. My sister and I still fist-fight at the mature ages of 22 and 20. It's easier to settle arguments by beating the crap out of each other. No one's been seriously injured...yet.

9. I hate to say it, but I often find myself judging people for what they wear and how they act in church. I'm sorry, but booty shorts are not appropriate. Never will be.

10. It is impossible for me to keep my room clean for more than one day. I've tried and failed more times than I can count.

Hopefully this list doesn't make you run for the hills. I'm not that bad, I swear!

Thanks for reading!

About Me: I'll Probably Crash & Burn

Welcome to my first monthly blogging challenge, or as I like to call it, "The challenge that ended before it even started." Here's the deal, I've never finished any challenge ever in my life. This one from the Northeast Bloggers Network is perfect because I feel obligated to post every day YAY! Without further ado, here is my first post for the August Blogging Challenge.

DAY 1 : Who are you?  Introduce us to you!

Oh boy do I love to spew random info talk about myself. My name is Monica and I just turned 22 (HOLLA). I've been dating my boyfriend Kris for 5 and a half years and probably won't get married for a while because we're starving college students.
I probably shouldn't admit that the "prom pose" was my idea.

I'm starting my last undergrad semester in 24 days and then I'll hopefully be accepted to a Doctorate of Audiology program for next fall. I love hearing and ear stuff and I will probably die if I don't get in.

My best friends Amy and Sarah are perfect. They love me even though I send them hideous Snapchats every day and complain about my boobs being nonexistent too small.

I live at home with my parents and I work on the weekends to pay for my train pass to school (#commuterproblems). I kinda can't wait until school starts so I have more fodder for my blog posts. Public transportation is a goldmine.

I love to read, tweet, pin, tumbl, Instagram, and blog. At some point, I'm sure you'll realize that I'm a huge geek and drop me like a hot potato. I love Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, and oxford commas.  I also love snuggling with dogs and babies, painting my nails, screaming at the tv while watching Philly sports, photo-bombing, and popping bubble wrap. I'd also be lying if I said I wasn't a fan of beer, wine, and vodka.
Yes, I dressed up as Tonks for a Harry Potter movie premiere.
I love to drink tea too fast and it's always gone before I know it. Hence, The Empty Teacups. If there's anything else you'd like to know, check out my about me tab at the top of the page or talk to me on The Tweeter.
